An essential component to any successful film, television production, video, or commercial is the B-roll. A term coined in the early days of shooting, B-roll refers to the supplemental footage used to support and elaborate the principal photography (I.e. a clip of coffee being made played over a narration of a coffee brand, puppies running around as the information for an adoption center is being described to the audience, etc).  B-roll helps give a visual of what the subject or primary story is focusing on, which helps grasp and maintain the attention of the audience by using relevant cutaways and transitional shots. These shots are not usually able to stand on their own, but when used as a way to illustrate the narration, can be incredibly useful and give a final product the extra kick it needs to keep a viewer fully engaged and visually informed on the subject matter. B-roll can originate from [...]

We’ve experienced some turbulence learning the art of aerial filming (four drones later), but the hard lessons have really started to pay off. Our latest flying machine is an Inspire 2 Pro outfitted with a Zenmuse X5S camera with CinemaDNG and ProRes capabilities, which allows for some stunning visuals. We now have the ability to capture 4K footage that just a couple of years ago would have been out of the question for most project budgets. Cinematic Storytelling Today we use our aerial capabilities to add a cinematic quality. The footage is amazing and it’s a blast to shoot! Whether flying through a large industrial building or soaring above scenic vistas, the drone gives us a whole new perspective, and we are able to capture shots that would not be possible from the ground. FAA Certified We are in compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration's strict operating rules regarding drones flown for commercial use. We've passed the aeronautical knowledge exam to become FAA [...]

FILMING IN THE SNOW: BEHIND THE SCENES VIDEO

Glass Eye was hired to shoot multiple tractors in a snowy environment in Park City, Utah, which was a fun challenge for our crew. At the beginning we were hoping for 2-3 feet of snow on the ground, which is when the equipment we were shooting would typically be used to move snow.  Unfortunately we had record-breaking snowfall the weeks prior and had additional snowfall while we were there. This made things a lot more complicated, not only for the John Deere equipment, but also for our crew to accomplish our job. Despite the obstacles, we were able to accomplish our goals with hard work and solid gear. Glass Eye faced many challenges at the shoot, mostly related to the extremely cold weather conditions. Shooting in cold weather is tough of on our gear, causing all sorts of problems. High altitude and cold weather change the dynamics of aerial shooting, and not in a [...]

SHOOTING IN STUDIO

By |2017-03-30T21:10:46+00:00March 21st, 2017|Categories: Production|Tags: , , , , |Comments Off on SHOOTING IN STUDIO

Glass Eye Productions, Inc. filmed a shoot for a medical device in our studio, utilizing our small video insert stage with hard cyc for a new client. Our location made the shoot more cost-effective for our client. Glass Eye was able to provide a low-cost solution by keeping the production within a one-day shoot. Our biggest challenge was the size of the medical equipment, weighing 3500 pounds. Delivery and placement were key to utilizing our smaller studio in a big way. We shot with our new Red Epic-W S35 camera in 8K to further ensure that our clients would receive the best product possible. Click the link below to see the exciting shoot. E-Gurney Video Shot at Glass Eye Productions Studio Our director was so camera-friendly that they cast him in a bit part as the doctor. Shot with our new Red Epic-W S35 in 8K. LOCATION SCOUTING

By |2017-02-27T21:53:57+00:00December 20th, 2016|Categories: Production, Uncategorized|Tags: , , , , , , , |Comments Off on LOCATION SCOUTING

At Glass Eye Productions, Inc., we value the location scouting process and do everything in our power to find the location for shoots that will help create the best footage. One of the most important but not totally obvious aspects of pre-production is location scouting. This is the process of traveling to a location to determine if it should or should not be used in a particular shoot, or to see what can be changed to make the place more flattering for a shoot. Even though the location of a shoot becomes a background detail to viewers, it can stand out in a negative way if it doesn’t fit the needs of the scene. At Glass Eye Productions, Inc., we value the location scouting process and do everything in our power to find the location for shoots that will help create the best footage. Some shoots don’t require location scouting, but for those that [...]

A LOOK INTO TIME-LAPSE

By |2017-03-06T23:25:45+00:00August 23rd, 2016|Categories: Production|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |Comments Off on A LOOK INTO TIME-LAPSE

A lot of work goes into a time-lapse shoot, since the videographer is required to take many pictures in a specific spot for a long period of time, constantly monitoring the lighting and camera functions. These shoots usually take a few hours or even a full day, making it necessary to have a highly focused and dedicated videographer on the job. Since the location on a time-lapse video usually does not change, the videographer must pay extra attention to detail to make sure that the footage is consistent and high quality throughout the day. Glass Eye was tasked to demonstrate the intense process that John Deere utilized to build a full-scale combine made from canned foods that were later donated to a local food bank. Time-lapse was the only true way to show the build from start to finish. Watch the series here on YouTube. Even though this practice is fairly common, it never [...]

A LOOK INTO PRODUCING: PRE-PRODUCTION

By |2017-03-06T23:19:55+00:00August 9th, 2016|Categories: Production|Tags: , , , , |Comments Off on A LOOK INTO PRODUCING: PRE-PRODUCTION

There are three stages to every production, which are pre-production, production and post production. In this blog post we will focus on the pre-production phase. Preparing: Preparing for a TV spot, shoot or any other type of major on-location production can be daunting. It is important to focus on every aspect of the production prior to the shoot. The pre-production phase is where great planning pays off big later in the production. Initially our projects at Glass Eye will usually start with a shooting date and a rough script. The script will generally be honed throughout the pre-production process. Sometimes, the client will maintain that aspect of the project and other times it is our job to work on it as the scriptwriters. But the core idea is usually enough to start our planning. Once we know the location, it is helpful to storyboard the entire shoot. We can do this through a combination [...]

A LOOK INTO BEHIND THE SCENES: LUCY’S DREAM

Fresh off our edit bay: Glass Eye Productions produced, shot, and edited a multi-region commercial TV spot for John Deere, the largest agricultural machinery company in the world. The spot was shot on an organic farm location in Moorpark, CA. Glass Eye Productions handled the entire production process including location scouting and casting. The in-house advertising team in Olathe, Kansas, created the script. We really liked the concept and story and felt it connected with a segment of their consumer base that often gets overlooked. The campaign has been very successful for John Deere, and our Glass Eye crew feels fortunate to have been a part of it. Lucy’s Dream Storyline Lucy has always dreamed of owning her own business. She knows about produce, but not about horsepower. The John Deere 3E tractor is easy to work with and provides the support Lucy needs to fulfill her dreams. Click for an exclusive look – [...]
